Nike
Project Move

Nike Project Move is a student-led initiative to encourage movement on university campuses. Its goal is to expand the traditional idea of movement and get farther reaches of the student body active in creative ways across campus. It was started on The Ohio State University campus, with over 300 students submitting self-made video applications.

I worked on this multi-phase pilot program for a year — designing and helping its evolution from planning, to launch, to expansion into multiple universities.

The Welcome Kit

A workshop was held at Nike World Headquarters to kick off the student projects and before the cohort could arrive on campus, they needed a welcome kit.

I was heavily involved in this phase, working alongside our tight-knit team on a multitude of tasks to get the cohort and workshop ready.

I contributed in many areas, from ideating what would go in their kits, to creating custom name tags and packaging, to designing workshop materials. I sourced items, imprinted soap, packed each cohort member’s kit, and even made some rad handmade signs.

The Workbook

Included in the kit was a printed workbook zine. Inside, we designed a packing list, tear-out poster, and some custom stickers to put on their new gear. I worked with my team to design the layout and experience as well as oversaw production of the workbook.

The Rebrand

With the success of Project Move’s run at OSU, Nike grew the program to include The University of Texas at Austin the following year. With this expansion of the project, the branding needed an update.

The first iteration of the logo was done quickly and in practice, it was learned that it was hard to use in multiple scenarios. We needed to rebrand the program both to give it new life and to fix some of the technical design problems.

I was the lead designer for the rebrand of Project Move and was closely involved from brand concepting to execution of the new site.

Project Move was born to inspire a diversity of movement and show how countless activities can fall under the umbrella of “movement” that many might not realize.

When thinking of new concepts, I returned to a common term used in the program — the playbook. The different symbols used in a playbook ignited inspiration for the new logo and the mark became something that not only alluded to sports but also symbolized the various forms movement can take.

Since movement is fluid and ever-changing, a single color or color palette didn’t do the message justice, so the new mark was paired with a dynamic gradient. Within the site, the gradient moved and came to life when interacted with to embody the physicality and brightness of moving.

Project Move 2020

In mid-2020 Project Move launched into its second year, receiving over 580 video applications, and welcoming in two new cohorts.
